How to Get a Transcript of a TikTok Video (3 Ways)

Learn three ways to get a TikTok transcript, when each method works, and how to copy or download the text as TXT, SRT or VTT with ScriptGrab.

ScriptGrab

The fastest way to get a TikTok transcript is to paste a public video link into a caption extractor. If you only need a sentence or two, reading the captions in TikTok may be enough. If no usable captions are available, manual transcription is the reliable fallback.

The right method depends on how much text you need and what you plan to do with it.

Three ways to get a TikTok transcript

1. Read the captions in TikTok

Some TikTok videos display creator-added or automatic captions while they play. For a short clip, watching with captions enabled can be the quickest way to check a quote or understand a passing point.

This approach has limits:

  • Captions are not available on every video.
  • The text on screen is not an exportable transcript.
  • Fast speech, music and automatic-caption errors can make accurate copying difficult.
  • Text placed on the image by the creator is not necessarily the same as a caption track.

Use this method when you only need a short reference. It is not practical when you need a complete, searchable document.

2. Extract the caption text with ScriptGrab

ScriptGrab's TikTok transcript tool turns the available caption data from a public TikTok into text you can read, copy and download. It also returns timestamped segments, which are useful when the transcript will become subtitles.

This is the best option when you need the whole video, want to compare several scripts, or need a TXT, SRT or VTT file.

ScriptGrab currently extracts available caption data. A public video can still fail if no usable caption track is available. AI transcription for caption-less videos is planned, but it is not assumed in this guide.

3. Transcribe the video manually

Play a few seconds, pause, type what you heard, and repeat. Manual transcription gives you full control over punctuation, names and uncertain words. It can also work when automated caption extraction cannot.

The tradeoff is time. A short clip may be manageable; a long video with fast speech, background music or an unfamiliar accent can take much longer. For important quotations, even an extracted transcript should be checked against the original audio.

How to get a TikTok transcript with ScriptGrab

1. Copy the link to a single video

Open the TikTok app or website and choose Share → Copy link. Both full tiktok.com URLs and short share links such as vm.tiktok.com can work.

Copy the URL of the individual video, not a creator profile, search result, hashtag page or comment page. The video must be public and accessible.

2. Paste the link into the transcript tool

Open the TikTok transcript generator, paste the URL into the input field and select Grab the Script. The platform is detected from the link.

Processing runs in the background while the page checks for the result. Short videos usually finish quickly, but longer videos and busy periods can take more time.

3. Review the text and timestamps

Read the full text or switch to the line-by-line view. Check names, brands, technical terms and numbers against the video before quoting or publishing them. Automatic captions can contain mistakes even when the extraction itself succeeds.

The transcript contains spoken-caption text. It does not include the post description, hashtags, comments or every piece of text visible in the video image.

4. Copy or download the result

Use Copy when you want to paste the text into notes or another document. Download a file when you want to keep or edit the result:

| Format | Best for | What it contains | |---|---|---| | TXT | Reading, searching, translating and rewriting | The transcript as plain text | | SRT | Video editors and subtitle workflows | Numbered caption segments with timecodes | | VTT | HTML5 players and web caption tracks | Timestamped caption segments in WebVTT format |

If you are unsure, choose TXT for research and SRT for a video-editing project.

Why a TikTok transcript might be unavailable

A failed extraction does not spend a credit. Before trying again, check the most common causes:

  • The video is not public. Private, friends-only and restricted videos cannot be fetched.
  • The video was deleted or changed. Make sure the link still opens in a logged-out browser.
  • The link is not a single-video URL. Replace profile and hashtag links with the video's share link.
  • There is no usable caption data. Visible text in the image does not guarantee that a caption track exists.
  • There is no speech to transcribe. Music-only and silent videos do not have a spoken script.

If the video has speech but no usable captions, manual transcription is the current alternative described above.

What you can do with the transcript

A transcript makes a video searchable and easier to examine. You can translate it, annotate it, quote a checked passage, or turn your own spoken content into an article outline.

For content research, mark the opening hook, the structure and the call to action instead of copying the entire script. The follow-up guide on extracting and analyzing a TikTok script walks through that workflow.

FAQ

Can I get a transcript of any public TikTok?

The video must be public and have usable caption data. Public access alone does not guarantee that a transcript can be extracted. Private, deleted, region-blocked and age-restricted videos can also fail.

Does it work when a TikTok has no captions?

Not reliably. ScriptGrab currently extracts available caption data; text burned into the video image is not the same thing. AI transcription for videos without captions is planned. Manual transcription is the fallback today.

Is TikTok transcript extraction free?

A TikTok extraction uses one credit. Free accounts receive 5 credits each week, a failed extraction does not spend a credit, and a repeat extraction of the same video by the same user within 30 days is free.

Does the transcript include on-screen text and hashtags?

It includes the extracted spoken-caption text, not the post description, hashtags or comments. Text that appears only inside the video image is not included either.

Can I publish someone else's TikTok transcript?

The transcript does not transfer the creator's rights to you. Use it for research, reference and analysis, and check the source and applicable platform terms before publishing. For your own content, add original commentary or rewrite the idea in your own words rather than presenting someone else's script as yours.
